Introduction This section of the PCT is a delight in many ways:
- It contains 13 rare species (see below).
- It contains mile 400 of the PCT, measured from the Mexican Border, although the precise location of mile 400 is an ever-changing target, and one that is not precisely known even if the trail didn't change with time. In our survey on 9 June 2015, we found four different 400 signs along the trail, separated by about a mile.
- It contains the transition from the high country of the eastern San Gabriel Mountains to the mid-elevations of the western San Gabriel Mountains.
Highlights of This Trail Botanical highlights of this trail include seeing 13 species that are considered rare, listed in the CNPS Inventory of Rare, Threatened, and Endangered Plants of California. They are:

The Plant Guide See also Species list in Traditional Family Order, which gives a cross-reference to the location of each species in this guide, and contains links for each species to the Jepson Manual eflora and to Calphotos.
In the Mile column, OT means a species seen off-trail, up a side drainage or the portion of Camp Glenwood near the trail.
The scientific names follow the 2012 Jepson Manual Second Edition with only a few exceptions.
