Flora of Truckhaven Rocks Area
Introduction The Truckhaven Rocks are beautiful isolated Badlands Formation Sediments named for their presence just north of the old Truckhaven Trail. They are the same formation as the rocks to the west, but have been isolated from them by erosion. For more info on this hike, see:
- Modern Hiker
- Guide from the Canyoneers in the San Diego Reader
- Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen's Hiking Page
The flora is from:
- Fieldwork by Tom Chester, Kate Harper, and Mike Crouse on 17 January 2016, when annuals were just germinating.
- A 45 minute spot survey of an excellent flower area 0.1 miles west of the main Truckhaven Rocks Wash, on 27 January 2019, by Tom Chester, Nancy Accola, Walt Fidler, John Randall, Don Rideout, and Joe Woods.
- Fieldwork by Tom Chester, Walt Fidler, Don Rideout, Kate Harper, Joe Woods, Jim Roberts, and Terry Hunefeld on 1 February 2019, after good October rains had produced a good bloom here.
- Fieldwork by Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen on 10 April 2012, 21 January 2019, and 29 January 2019.
- A half day of fieldwork by Tom Chester, Nancy Accola, and Joe Woods on 24 December 2019.
- iNaturalist observations, mostly by Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen, Terry Hunefeld, and Don Rideout.
There were only 22 vouchers that were possibly from this area, which contributed no additional species.
Checklist for Truckhaven Rocks Area See:
- Notes on the Scientific Names Used At This Site and
- Information about the order in which the species are presented, and the links from the Scientific Name and Common Name.
An asterisk before the common name indicates a non-native species.
The column with label BW
links to the photo gallery page for each species at Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen's BorregoWildflowers site.
The column with header #Pls gives the minimum number of plants observed in the union of all the field surveys done here, up to a maximum number of 99. An iNat in this column indicates a species with an iNaturalist observations that we have not yet observed. An FC in this column indicates a species in the Carla Hoegen and Fred Melgert plant list for this area, that was not observed in surveys where abundances were estimated, and that does not have an iNat observation.
