Encelia actoni and E. virginensis Flower Head Variation

This page shows all the flower heads for each species used for my analysis of the differences between the two species.

For both species, the heads are presented in order from the least number of rays to the greatest number of rays.

The identification to species is quite solid, since the heads are taken only from observations in areas where only one of the species is found.

I had hoped that by studying these side-by-side pix, I might pick up some characteristics that could separate the species just on these pix. But looking at all these heads, I don't think I would be able to confidently assign any of them to species based solely on the flowering head! If you think you can, you should have someone present these heads to you in random order, and see if you can correctly sort them out. If you succeed in doing that, please let me know how to do it.
