Photographs of D. arizonica, D. saxosa, and their hybrid

This page presents photographs of the rosettes of these species that I have measured for my study of A Hybrid Population of D. arizonica and D. saxosa. The photographs are presented in order of the value of the first Principal Component (PC1). See, in particular, Fig. 4 from that study.

Fig. 1 shows measured specimens of D. arizonica, with PC1 values between -5 and -1.5. Fig. 2 shows the hybrids, with PC1 values between -1.1 and 0.5. Fig. 3 shows D. saxosa, with PC1 values between 0.7 and 4.

PC1 is mostly derived from the ratio of the width to the length of the leaves. It is evident in each figure that the ones at the top have wider leaves relative to their length than ones at the bottom.

Each photograph is linked to the original iNat observation.

D. arizonica, PC1 = -4.81

D. arizonica, PC1 = -3.69

D. arizonica, PC1 = -3.51

D. arizonica, PC1 = -2.91

D. arizonica, PC1 = -2.56

D. arizonica, PC1 = -2.39

D. arizonica, PC1 = -1.84

Fig. 1. Photographs of the rosettes of D. arizonica used for this study, in order of the value of the first principal component (PC1) for each specimen. Specimens near the top have the widest leaves, with PC1 values maximally different from those of D. saxosa, and specimens near the bottom have the narrowest leaves of sampled D. arizonica plants.

Hybrid of D. arizonica and D. saxosa, PC1 = -1.05

Hybrid of D. arizonica and D. saxosa, PC1 = -0.74

Hybrid of D. arizonica and D. saxosa, PC1 = -0.53

Hybrid of D. arizonica and D. saxosa, PC1 = 0.10

Hybrid of D. arizonica and D. saxosa, PC1 = 0.46
(intentionally blank)
Fig. 2. Photographs of the rosettes of the hybrids between D. arizonica and D. saxosa used for this study, in order of the value of the first principal component (PC1) for each specimen. As expected from the sort on PC1, specimens near the top more closely resemble D. arizonica, and specimens near the bottom more closely resemble D. saxosa.

D. saxosa, PC1 = 0.74

D. saxosa, PC1 = 0.87

D. saxosa, PC1 = 1.61

D. saxosa, PC1 = 1.70

D. saxosa, PC1 = 1.73

D. saxosa, PC1 = 2.31

D. saxosa, PC1 = 2.43

D. saxosa, PC1 = 2.52

D. saxosa, PC1 = 3.09

D. saxosa, PC1 = 3.11

D. saxosa, PC1 = 3.34
(intentionally blank)
Fig. 3. Photographs of the rosettes of D. saxosa used for this study, in order of the value of the first principal component (PC1) for each specimen. Specimens near the top have wider leaves, making their PC1 values closer to that of D. arizonica, and specimens near the bottom have narrower leaves, making their PC1 values very distant from those of D. arizonica.
