Flora of the Greater Santa Rosa Plateau Region

Introduction
The Flora

Introduction

This page gives the most recent list of 667 taxa found in the Santa Rosa Plateau Region, as of 9 June 2005.

As defined by Lathrop and Thorne (1985), the Greater Santa Rosa Plateau Region encompasses 18,218 hectares (45,017 acres), about 5.4 times larger than the ~3,360 ha (~8,300 acres) preserved by the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve. Lathrop and Thorne state that the border lines of the plateau are: north, Los Alamos and Slaughterhouse Canyons; east, Miller Canyon and Guava St.; south, Cottonwood and De Luz Canyons; and east, San Mateo and Tenaja canyons. (map to be added later.)

Because only the taxa within the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve are protected from annihilation through "development", it is of interest to note which taxa have been found on the Reserve. Also, since most people would like to know what taxa are found on the trails of the Reserve, I note those taxa separately below. (See also a list of just those taxa.) Lathrop and Thorne did not report locations precisely enough for 15 taxa to determine whether they are within the boundaries of the Preserve. These taxa are marked as such in the table below.

Numerology of the Taxa and Updating of Botanical Names

Lathrop and Thorne (1985) reported 582 taxa as actually being present for the larger region, and had previously reported another taxon which was omitted from their 1985 list. They also included an additional 12 taxa in their list as expected to occur here, but not actually found. Those taxa were included in the summary of their flora. These taxa are only listed here if they were subsequently found to be present. So far, only 4 of their 12 such taxa have been found.

Their total 583 taxa actually present becomes 579 taxa after updating the names to those used in the Jepson Manual. These 579 taxa make up 87% of the list given here. See the numerology of these taxa and the changes made to update the names.

There were a handful of taxa that were misidentified by Lathrop and Thorne. A separate webpage will give a list of those changes.

An additional 88 taxa have been found since 1985 by a number of other people, for a total of 667 taxa presented here. A separate webpage will give those taxa, along with their voucher status. A voucher at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden Herbarium or University of California Riverside Herbarium will document every taxon listed here.

In addition to these new taxa, there have been distinct changes in the flora of the Plateau since 1985 in the abundance and distribution of taxa reported by Lathrop and Thorne. A separate webpage will discuss these changes.

There is often uncertainty in the process of updating older names, such as those used by Lathrop and Thorne, to new names, in this case those of the Jepson Manual. These taxa which have uncertain Jepson Manual names, usually involving only the subspecies or variety name, are indicated in the table. The subspecies or variety name can be uncertain either because the subspecies or variety names were defined after Lathrop and Thorne made their determination, or because Lathrop and Thorne declined to state one. Also, at least one of the additional taxa has not yet been definitively identified, due to the drought in 2002, and is also marked. Most of these taxa should be definitively identified during the next year.

The name-updating process itself is very prone to human error as well. To quantify just how difficult a job it was in this case, a separate webpage will compare attempts by three other knowledgeable botanists who have done that conversion separately. The number of errors made in that conversion by each person ranged from three to six, with an additional eight to nine missing taxa in each rendition, with my original attempt being no exception. Fortunately, since a cross-comparison to these other efforts helped find the errors I made, the list below should be free from such errors. If any reader discovers an error that all four of us made, please let me know.

The Flora

This flora reports only the taxa found outside the planted areas at the Visitor Center and at the Adobes. A separate webpage will report the taxa planted in those locations.

An asterisk before the common name indicates a taxon not-native to California.

The columns On ER Trails and In ER indicate, respectively, whether a taxon is present on or near trails inside the Ecological Reserve, and whether a taxon has been document within any part of the Reserve. At present, 420 taxa are marked as being on or near the trails of Reserve; 608 taxa are marked as being inside any part of the Reserve, including the 15 taxa which may or may not be within the Reserve; and the remaining 59 taxa are found only outside the Reserve.

A quick reference to the source of a given taxon is given in the column Source below. Most people should simply ignore this column, and now go directly to the Flora.

The source is coded as follows: the rightmost digit gives the original source for that taxon. If the source was Lathrop and Thorne, the digit also denotes whether the taxon was inside the Reserve ("1"), or definitely ("2") or perhaps ("3") found outside the Reserve. The next digit to the left reports whether the name was converted to a Jepson Manual name ("8") or modified or verified by myself ("6").

The code for different observers is:

CodeObserver
1Lathrop and Thorne (1985), taxon probably found within the Reserve
2Lathrop and Thorne (1985), taxon definitely found outside the Reserve
3Lathrop and Thorne (1985), taxon perhaps found outside the Reserve
4Bob Muns
6Tom Chester
7Zach Principe (Reserve Biologist)
8Taxon name updated to Jepson Manual name
9Taxon reported in Lathrop and Thorne (1985) as one expected to occur here, but not actually found. Such taxa are listed here only if they have subsequently been found to be present. So far, only 4 of their 12 such taxa have been found.
10Lathrop and Thorne voucher subsequently reclassified by Steve Boyd as a new taxa.
11Kay Madore
12A single taxon, Cotula coronopifolia, given in Lathrop and Thorne (1983), missing from Lathrop and Thorne (1985).
88Taxon name updated to Jepson Manual name, but the Jepson Manual name is ambiguous, since some subspecies have gone to one species and some have gone to another, and no subspecies was given by Lathrop and Thorne.

Here are two examples of how to decode the most complicated cases:

This Source column is not intended to give unambiguous information about what the updates are. That information is given in a separate webpage, and this column is only intended to mark the existence of that information.
