Plant Checklist For Black Mountain Road Area, San Jacinto Mountains This flora was produced to use in the field to work on the flora of the Black Mountain Road Area. It consists of species from a one day survey along the road on 11 June 2018; a car trip noting species in bloom on 2 August 2011 on our drive to the Fuller Ridge Trailhead; and a voucher search on 9 June 2018 for the area around the road, as well as in the Fuller Mill / Dark Canyon area to the east. It also includes species found in our trail work on the Fuller Ridge Trail; the 7 Pines / Marion Mountain Trail loop; the valley near the Fuller Ridge Trailhead, and the California Riding and Hiking Trail area at Black Mountain. When further work in the field clarifies which species are only found on the Black Mountain Road area, the additional species from those other areas will no longer be included.
The field survey on 11 June 2018 was done by Tom Chester, Nancy Accola, and Don Rideout in three parts:
- a brief survey of the area near the junction with the road to Pinewood, with 35 species found in a total of 0.3 unique miles surveyed.
- a survey of 2.7 unique miles from 0.5 miles below Cinco Poses Spring to the top of Black Mountain, with 53 species found that could be confidently identified, along with four other species that could not be reliably identified.
- a slow car survey down the road looking for additional species, which found 15 species that could be confidently identified that were not seen in the previous two surveys, along with two additional species that could not be reliably identified.
The total number of reliably identified species on this day was 81, along with six additional species that could not be reliably determined.
The car trip on 2 August 2011 was done by Tom Chester, Dave Stith, Norm Johnson, Pam Pallette, Peter Bryant and Portia Arutunian. Most species were noted in bloom from "drive-by botany", so the list was undoubtedly quite incomplete. Nonetheless, that list contained species not noted on 11 June 2018, nor vouchered along the road.
The voucher search for the Black Mountain Road area included a search of georeferenced vouchers in the area of 33.79 to 33.84° N. Latitude, and -116.76 to -116.74° E. Longitude, as well as a search of all vouchers from Riverside County with a locality of Black Mountain Road or Cinco Poses Spring. The locality field was examined for the resulting vouchers, and only those that clearly stated they were from the Black Mountain road area north of SR243 were kept. Vouchers from the Fuller Mill / Dark Canyon area were kept separately for a voucher checklist for that area, but are included in the flora here for now. All other vouchers were tossed from further consideration.
The following voucher determinations were rejected:
- Carex specifica
- Ceanothus integerrimus
- Claytonia perfoliata var. parviflora
- Galium johnstonii
- Hypericum androsaemum
- Lupinus andersonii
- Lupinus formosus
The following gives basic information about this checklist.
See:
- Notes on the Scientific Names Used At This Site and
- Information about the links from the Scientific Name and Common Name.
An asterisk before the common name indicates a non-native species.
The column labeled #V gives the number of vouchers, truncated at 9, for the area near Black Mountain Road. Species with no entry in this column came from one of the other sources used for this checklist, as detailed above.
The column labeled #Pls gives the minimum number of plants, up to a maximum of 99 plants, seen in the 11 June 2018 hiking and car survey. The number of plants seen in the car survey is almost surely a severe underestimate. An x in this column indicates a species seen in bloom in a car survey on 2 August 2011, when no abundances were estimated.
