Introduction Flora of Icehouse Canyon, San Gabriel Mountains
The FloraIntroduction
This flora was made from a voucher search of the Consortium of California Herbaria on 12 October 2017; two field trips, on 16 and 26 October 2017; and the species shown in Michael Charters' Photo Gallery of Icehouse Canyon, June 2008.
Vouchers. A geographic coordinate search, for vouchers with coordinates, was made for the region of 34.24 to 34.26° north latitude and -117.64 to -117.60° east longitude. No separate search was made for non-georeferenced vouchers.
This search region includes all of the Icehouse Canyon trail up to about 7100 feet, but does not include the last half mile of the trail up to Icehouse Saddle.
The vouchers were manually sorted into ones in Icehouse Canyon in the area of the Icehouse Canyon Trail, including the Chapman Trail, and those away from those trails, which include vouchers from tributaries of Icehouse Canyon, and from near the mouth of Icehouse Canyon. The purpose was to clearly indicate which species one would expect to see by hiking the area near those trails. The other vouchers were included to make the flora of the trail area more complete, to make up for species along those trails that were not vouchered from that area.
The 330 vouchers from the Icehouse Canyon trails area were collected by many different people, with no dominant collector. Interestingly, the top two collectors were I.M. Johnston (56 vouchers, 17% of the 330 vouchers) and S.B. Parish (39 vouchers, 12%), with most of those vouchers from the year 1918! Orlando Mistretta was #3 on that list, collecting 35 vouchers from 1989 to 1993.
In contrast, of the 244 vouchers from the nearby area, R.G. Swinney was the dominant collector by far, with 177 vouchers, 72% of all the vouchers!
Two vouchered species were tossed as being probable misdeterminations: Acmispon argyraeus and Carex multicostata. There are only two widely-separated vouchers at SnGb of Acmispon argyraeus, which is given as being only at SnBr, SnJt, DMtns in the Jepson eflora. There is only a single 1918 voucher at SnGb, by Parish in 1918, of Carex multicostata, which is given as being only at CaRH, SNH, SnBr, SnJt in the Jepson eflora.
Field Trips. On 16 October 2017, Tom Chester, Walt Fidler, Nancy Accola, James Dillane and Mike Crouse surveyed from the parking area to the lower Chapman Trail junction, and then up the Chapman Trail to the Cedar Glen Trail Camp. The species were recorded in the field, but an estimate of the plant abundances was not made until two days later.
On 26 October 2017, Tom Chester, Walt Fidler and Nancy Accola surveyed the Icehouse Canyon / Chapman Trail loop. The species were recorded in the field, and most abundances estimated in the field as we surveyed. A number of species were counted individually as we surveyed.
The Flora
See Michael Charters' Photo Gallery of Icehouse Canyon, June 2008 for pictures of 43 of these species.
The column with header #V gives the number of vouchers for the Icehouse Canyon Trail and Chapman Trail area, from a voucher search on 12 October 2017 of the Consortium of California Herbaria.. A CF in this column indicates a species with a Calflora observation by Diego Villalobos of the Forest Service.
The column with header #Pls gives the minimum number of plants for each observed species, up to a maximum of 99 plants. A MC in this column indicates a species present in Michael Charters' Photo Gallery that we didn't see in the field surveys. A P after the number of plants indicates a species planted amidst the cabins.
Species that were not found in our surveys, or by Michael Charters, and that have no voucher for the Icehouse Canyon Trail and Chapman Trail area, but that do have vouchers from a larger area surrounding Icehouse Canyon itself, are included in the flora, but have no entries in any column. These species were vouchered from tributaries of Icehouse Canyon; from near the mouth of Icehouse Canyon; or from the immediate vicinity of Icehouse Saddle. Those species may or may not be present from Icehouse Canyon proper or the Chapman Trail. In the future, if we ever survey this area at prime time, we'll remove any such species that we do not record in this area.
