Flora of Whale Peak / Pinyon Mountain Valley Area, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Introduction
Checklist

Introduction

The non-bold section of the Intro is out of date; list now comes from fieldwork on 19 and 23 April 2012, 10 November 2013, and 19 and 23 January 2014. The vouchers were examined more critically, and the voucher list below now includes only the species from above 3000 feet elevation in the area accessed from Pinyon Mountain Road, including Whale Peak. Vouchers from Smuggler Canyon were moved to its flora. Vouchers from the 1936 Pinyon Mountain trip were moved to the Smuggler Canyon flora, except for those that might have been from Whale Peak.

The #Pls observed are those seen in three different sections: on the Whale Peak Trail, including both the Schad and Lindsay trailheads; on a loop on the west end of Pinyon Mountain Road in the Mine Canyon drainage; and on a loop in the Pinyon Mountain Road area at the Schad Whale Peak Trailhead and west.

Species in the Checklist without vouchers or # plants from the Whale Peak Trail, such as Eriogonum plumatella, were observed along Pinyon Mountain Road above 3000 feet elevation.

This checklist is compiled from vouchers taken in the area above 3000 feet elevation in the Whale Peak / Pinyon Mountain Road Area, along with a list of plants compiled from memory from a single trip on 4 June 2011.

The vouchers come from a search on 6 June 2011 of the Consortium of California Herbaria.

The Consortium records were searched for vouchers with coordinates between 33.00 and 33.07° N. Latitude, and -116.39 and -116.26 E. Longitude. This search returned 511 vouchers of 213 taxa after tossing ones not in the target area, which were all in nearby areas just below 3000 feet elevation.

551 vouchers were found of 213 taxa. Two sets of collectors were responsible for 383 (59%) of those vouchers: 217 by Jon P. Rebman, Mike Simpson and Mike Mayer, including some taken by subsets of those collectors; and 166 (30%) by Larry Hendrickson. The collector with the next largest number of vouchers was Frank F. Gander, with 31 (6%). There were 44 other unique sets of collector names.

The trip on 4 June 2011 was primarily to find Arabis species, with Mike Crouse, Vince Balch and Pam Pallette. Two days after the trip, a list of observed taxa was compiled by going through a plant list containing all species observed in a much larger area surrounding this area. That exercise resulted in recording 64 taxa, of which four taxa were not present in the voucher list for this area. One taxon found from that exercise was only determined to species, so resulted in another entry below.

The final checklist contains a total of 218 taxa.

Checklist for Whale Peak / Pinyon Mountain Valley Area

See Information about the order in which the species are presented, and the links from the Scientific Name and Common Name.

The column #V is the number of vouchers for each taxon from the Consortium, with a maximum value of 9.

The column #Pl gives the number of plants observed in three separate areas:
