Flora of Stonewall Peak Area, Laguna Mountains, San Diego County
Introduction This checklist was made from vouchers and a single field survey done of 14 October 2016.
Vouchers
Vouchers were searched on 12 October 2016 at Consortium of California Herbaria. A geographic coordinate search, for vouchers with coordinates, was made for the region of 32.95 to 32.98° north latitude and -116.58 to -116.56° east longitude. No separate search was made for non-georeferenced vouchers.
The vouchers yielded a total of 225 taxa.
Fieldwork on 14 October 2016
On 14 October 2016, Tom Chester, Nancy Accola and Adrienne Ballwey surveyed the loop trail from the trailhead at SR79 across from the Paso Picacho Campground, to Stonewall Peak, then north to the California Riding and Hiking Trail and back by the Cold Stream Trail. This survey was of course very incomplete for annuals and perennials that did not have obvious remnants persisting into the fall.
The survey found a total of 123 taxa that could be reasonably well identified, with some determinations marked as being only probable determinations by a ~ in front of the number of plants found. 75 of those taxa have vouchers from this area; 48 taxa do not, although the vast majority of those 48 taxa have vouchers from the immediately-surrounding area.
Checklist See:
- Notes on the Scientific Names Used At This Site and
- Information about the order in which the species are presented, and the links from the Scientific Name and Common Name.
An asterisk before the common name indicates a non-native species.
The family name is abbreviated to the first three characters in order to save space in the table rows.
The column #V gives the number of vouchers for this area. If there is no entry in that column, the species was observed on one of our surveys at Cuyamaca Peak, and is given here to make the checklist more complete for field work.
The column #Pls gives our estimate of the minimum number of plants of each taxa found along our survey route, up to a maximum number of 99 plants. Because the survey was done in the fall, many annuals and perennials are missing from our survey, and the numbers of many plants are probably much lower than if we had done the survey at prime time. For example, we observed two plants of what is likely to be a Hulsea species, but since we could not confidently determine it to species, we did not list it.
The checklist includes 17 annuals and perennials observed in our Cuyamaca Peak survey on 1 June 2013 that we considered likely to occur here as well. Those species have no entry in either column.
