Flora of Cool Canyon, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Introduction This is a flora of Cool Canyon, a subset of the Flora of southeast Granite Mountain. See that page for some background information about this area and this checklist; Fig. 2 in that page shows Cool Canyon in the context of its surrounding area.
For additional information about hiking in Cool Canyon, with lots of pictures of the scenery and plants here, see Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen's pages:

We define the Cool Canyon area here to include the entire area drained by Cool Canyon, extending to the ridgelines separating its drainage area from the major canyons to its north, west and east, with the eastern boundary at Highway S2; see map showing boundaries and places where species were observed.
This page has been updated from the version at the link above with a new voucher search on 9 February 2018; the addition of species seen by Carla Hoegen and Fred Melgert on their Cool Canyon loops; species added from other visits to Cool Canyon; and records from iNaturalist. We searched records from Calflora as well, but there were no observations in this area.
This checklist now contains only species known to occur in the Cool Canyon area, and does not include species from Hornblende Canyon.
Field trips which contributed observations to this flora are:
- 28 March 2008, a two hour survey in lowermost Cool Canyon by Tom Chester, James Dillane, Wayne Armstrong, and Kate Shapiro.
- 6 October 2010, an hour survey of the south ridge of Cool Canyon by Tom Chester, Mike Crouse, Kate Shapiro, and Bill Sullivan.
- 13 October 2010, a one hour survey of the south ridge of Cool Canyon by Tom Chester, Mike Crouse, Kate Shapiro, and Bill Sullivan.
- 7 March 2014, a full day survey of 1.6 miles of Cool Canyon, by Tom Chester, with Kate Harper, RT Hawke, and Shaun Hawke joining for the last half, along with short surveys along S2 at the junction of the dirt road to Cool Canyon by Tom Chester.
- 4 June 2011, a brief search for Boechera species here by Tom Chester, Kate Shapiro, Mike Crouse, Vince Balch, and Pam Pallette.
- 9 April 2014, a survey of 3.5 miles of the Cool Canyon Loop 1 by Carla Hoegen and Fred Melgert.
- 1 April 2015, a survey of 4 miles of the Cool Canyon Loop 2 by Carla Hoegen and Fred Melgert.
- 12 February 2018, a full day survey of the north drainage near the mouth of Cool Canyon, and part of the south drainage one mile up the Canyon, by Tom Chester and Nancy Accola, with Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen surveying a difficult 1.2 mile excursion over hill and dale between that north drainage and the north drainage one mile up the Canyon.
Vouchers. There were 177 vouchers from Cool Canyon, 145 from Larry Hendrickson, 30 from Michael G. Simpson and colleagues, and 1 each from Juergen Schrenk and Bill Sullivan. One voucher determination of Argemone hispida was rejected. That species lives on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains, and it is likely that voucher is actually of A. munita.
The vouchers in Cool Canyon are primarily from 2400 to 2800 feet elevation (108 out of 125 with elevations), with the rest from 3000 to 4000 feet.
iNaturalist. There were 303 iNaturalist observations in Cool Canyon, 136 from Terry Hunefeld, 48 by James Bailey, 39 by Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen, and 80 observations by six others. Eight determinations were rejected as being either incorrect (and annotated by Tom), or not showing enough information in the pictures to definitively support the determination (and commented on by Tom).
Fig. 2 shows all the locations where species were recorded or vouchered by all of the above.

- 279 species GPS points by Tom Chester and colleagues on the field surveys
- 145 georeferenced vouchers by Larry Hendrickson
- 136 species GPS points by Terry Hunefeld at iNaturalist
- 80 species GPS points by six iNaturalists not identified separately here
- 48 species GPS points by James Bailey at iNaturalist
- 39 species GPS points by Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen at iNaturalist
- 30 georeferenced vouchers by Michael G. Simpson and colleagues
- 2 georeferenced vouchers by others.
Some notable species missing from the Cool Canyon Flora, that are found in the neighboring Horneblende Canyon, are Allionia incarnata, Ambrosia dumosa, Brassica tournefortii, Cylindropuntia bigelovii, Ditaxis neomexicana, Eschscholzia minutiflora, Euphorbia eriantha, Fagonia laevis, Galium stellatum, Pectocarya linearis ssp. ferocula, and Trixis californica var. californica.
Checklist for Cool Canyon See:
- Notes on the Scientific Names Used At This Site and
- Information about the links from the Scientific Name and Common Name.
An asterisk before the common name indicates a non-native species.
The column labeled #Pls gives a minimum estimate of the number of plants in Cool Canyon from our surveys. Non-numeric entries are for species for which no abundance estimate was made. A FC in this column indicates a species observed by Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen. A V in this column indicates a species that was vouchered, but not observed by us.
