Flora of Indian and Sheep Canyons, Collins Valley Area, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Introduction This is a separate flora for just Indian and Sheep Canyons, which begin in the southwest part of Collins Valley.
This checklist has been made from 9 field surveys done by the authors from 2009 to 2018, from vouchers, from iNaturalist observations, and from Calflora observations. Some of the field surveys included multiple-day surveys from Walt Fidler, so the total number of days in the field is something like 12 or 13.
Indian Canyon is the type locality for Salvia eremostachya, most likely from what is now called Deering Canyon or very nearby. Walt Fidler has found two hybrids of it with S. vaseyi and one hybrid of it with S. apiana.
Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen's hike pages have a map of this area, with many photographs of the scenery and flowers:
See also their plant list that includes observations of what species were in bloom on their trips.

The column with header Fam gives the first three letters of the plant family name. See Plant Family Abbreviations.
An asterisk before the common name indicates a non-native species.
The last two columns give the minimum number of plants for each observed species, up to a maximum of 99 plants, separately for the two canyons, column header SHP for Sheep Canyon, and IND for Indian Canyon. If we didn't observe a species, but it was vouchered, a V is present in the appropriate column. If either of these columns contains FC, it was an additional species observed by Fred Melgert and Carla Hoegen for which no abundance estimate was made. If either of these columns contains iNat, there was an iNaturalist observation in this area of species not found in vouchers or the field surveys by us or Fred and Carla (as of 15 March 2018 there were no additional species from iNat). A ~ or ? with the entry indicates that there is uncertainty about the species determination.
The voucher of Mammillaria tetrancistra is from Jepson, and is a possible misdetermination of M. dioica since that was almost surely the case for another such voucher from Jepson.
Version for printing, without lines and other text on this page: html (8 pages) or pdf Clickbook booklet (2 double-sided pages). (See printing instructions for an explanation of these options)
Voucher data provided by the participants of the Consortium of California Herbaria (ucjeps.berkeley.edu/consortium/)
We thank Vince Balch, Adrienne Ballwey, Mary Jo Churchwell, Shaun Hawke, Angelique Herman, and Bill Sullivan for helping on one of the surveys here.
