Flora of the SR78 / Old Kane Spring Road Area, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
Introduction This is a start at the flora of the SR78 / Old Kane Spring Road Area, from The Narrows on the west to the Ocotillo Wells area on the east.
There are separate floras for The Narrows area on the west; Borrego Mountain on the north; and Harper Canyon and Northeast Vallecito Mountains and Adjacent Lower Borrego Valley to the south.
The flora has been compiled from the following sources:
- A field survey on 20 February 2018 of the westernmost section of Old Kane Spring Road, in a very dry year where no annuals had germinated here, by Tom Chester, Nancy Accola, Walt Fidler, and Don Rideout.
- A brief survey of the plants in bloom at the intersection of SR78 and Buttes Pass Road on 6 January 2011 by Tom Chester, Mike Crouse, James Dillane, RT and Shaun Hawke, and Bill Sullivan.
- A one hour survey of plants at the intersection of SR78 and the Harper Canyon Jeep Road on 8 March 2011, by Tom Chester, Vince Balch, Mike Crouse, and Kate Harper, while we were waiting for officials to explode some "ancient armaments" that someone had found at west Borrego Mountain.
- A search of georeferenced vouchers on 12 November 2018 from 33.08 to 33.16° N. latitude and -116.24 to -116.07° E. Longitude.
iNaturalist was searched on 12 November 2018 for additional taxa, with none found. To make the flora more complete, it currently includes 19 taxa found in a survey of the lowermost part of The Narrows, and five taxa found from a voucher search for the westernmost section of Old Kane Spring Road. When more field surveys are done in the targeted area, we'll delete any remaining species in this list that were not found.
