Plants of the Devils Slide Wet Drainages

The Devils Slide Trail crosses seven wet drainage crossings that contain riparian plants. This page gives pictures of each drainage crossing and a list of the dominant plants in each one.

The Middle Springs Drainage has two closely-spaced branches at 7600 feet, which merge just below that elevation. Hence the branches are numbered 4a and 4b here.

The dominant plant species in each drainage crossing are given in the next table. The list of species is not complete for each drainage crossing; only the most prominent species as seen from the trail are noted. Note that drainage crossing #2 is given out of order in the following table in order to keep each drainage together in the table. The drainages are color-coded in the table.

Pictures of Each Drainage

All pictures are taken heading up the trail, just before the center of the drainage, unless noted otherwise. They were all taken on 14 July 2006.

#1, Mile 0.95, Jolley Spring, 7120 feet, 2170 m.

This picture is taken heading up the trail, just before the drainage. It doesn't show the moist bank just before the center of the drainage that contains all the Mimulus

#2, Mile 1.28, Powderbox Spring, 7320 feet, 2230 m.

#3, Mile 1.39, Middle Spring, 7380 feet, 2250 m.

#4a, Mile 1.66, Middle Spring, 7600 feet, 2315 m.

#4b, Mile 1.69, Middle Spring, 7600 feet, 2315 m.

#5, Mile 1.83, Powderbox Spring, 7680 feet, 2340 m.

#6, Mile 2.03, Powderbox Spring, 7840 feet, 2390 m.

The first picture above was taken on the approach to the drainage crossing; the second picture was taken from the crossing looking farther up the trail.

#7, Mile 2.32, Powderbox Spring, 8010 feet, 2440 m.

This picture is taken from past the drainage, looking back down the trail.
