Introduction

See Later Checklist Incorporating Further Survey Results for a better, more complete checklist which adds further survey results to the checklist presented below.

This is not to be confused with a flora of this area!!! This is only a compilation of voucher names, found in an online search in January 2010 for vouchers. It may have some obviously-wrong names in it!!

This was compiled solely in preparation for the BioBlitz scheduled in Whitewater River Canyon on 12-13 April 2010.

The goal of the organizers of the BioBlitz was to have as complete a checklist as possible, so this list errs on the side of completeness. Of course, the tradeoff for higher completeness is lower reliability, and thus this checklist undoubtedly includes taxa that are not actually found here.

Such voucher lists are usually very incomplete. However, I was astounded by the number of vouchers from the Banning Pass area; this voucher checklist is likely to be much more complete than the typical voucher checklist.

Caveat emptor!

Procedure For Compiling The Checklist

In January 2010, I searched the Consortium of California Herbaria in a number of different ways, in order to compile as complete a list of vouchers as I could for this area.

The initial voucher list was obtained by searching for vouchers with coordinates in the rectangle bounded by latitude 33.878 to 34.048°, and longitude -116.737 to -116.540°. That search returned a whopping 1,733 vouchers.

I then augmented that search by first gathering additional Riverside County vouchers. A search for Whitewater in the locality field returned 1,876 vouchers; a search for White water returned 148 vouchers.

I made further Riverside County searches for each of these localities individually: Bonnie Bell; trout farm; Stills Landing; Catclaw Flat; Red dome; Banning; Morongo Pass; wind; and Painted hill. The search for wind was motivated by the windmill farms at the mouth of the Whitewater River, as well as the location Windy pass.

Duplicate vouchers were removed and San Bernardino County vouchers were placed in a separate file for future work, leaving a total of 5,556 unique vouchers.

Those vouchers were sorted on the locality field, and then each voucher was tagged as being in one of the areas given in Table 1, which also gives the number of vouchers in each area.

Total Vouchers5,556

In this page, I explicitly use the location Whitewater Post Office to mean the location at the mouth of the Whitewater River Canyon, just north of I-10.

The tagging was done quickly, only taking ~2-4 hours in total (which is an average of 1-2 seconds per voucher), so it was surely not 100% reliable, but was not too much lower than 100%. What made this possible to do in this amount of time was that many vouchers had identical localities, such as Banning.

Many of the vouchers themselves had ambiguous positions, such as north of Whitewater. This could mean:

Due to the goal of completeness, I tagged all vouchers saying north of Whitewater as being in Whitewater Canyon, which is almost surely wrong for some of the vouchers.

The tagging was done without looking at the coordinates of vouchers.

A good check on the reliability of the tagging is to plot the vouchers with coordinates for each tagged area, as shown in Figure 1:

Voucher Locations by Tagged Area

Expanded map near Whitewater Canyon:

Figure 1 shows that by and large the tagging resulted in vouchers be placed in the appropriate geographic areas.

Anomalies in the first version of Figure 1 were checked, and a handful of vouchers were found to be incorrectly tagged. The apparent anomalies in the version shown above are either due to very imprecise voucher coordinates, a few erroneous voucher coordinates, or ambiguous positions.

The initial checklist presented below uses only the 1,642 vouchers tagged as being in the Whitewater River Canyon Area, as defined above. The vouchers were compared to my southern California database, and all names were converted to the 1993 Jepson Manual versions as much as possible.

Vouchers of just the species were assigned to the appropriate subspecies whenever the subspecies was unambiguous. If it was ambiguous, vouchers of just the species name were retained along with any vouchers of subspecies that also existed.

This resulted in a total of 401 separate taxa given in the checklist below.

In February 2010, I gathered the remaining San Bernardino County vouchers by searching for vouchers with coordinates in the rectangle bounded by latitude 34.033 to 34.115°, and longitude -116.825 to -116.675°. That search returned 277 vouchers, of which 148 vouchers had been found in the previous searches.

I augmented that search to find vouchers without coordinates by doing separate searches for San Bernardino County vouchers containing in turn the words Catclaw, Whitewater, Raywood. Those searches found an additional 20 vouchers that were actually in San Bernardino County, and 58 vouchers that were actually in Riverside County, even though the county was recorded as San Bernardino County. All of those vouchers were added to the appropriate section of Whitewater Canyon.

A good idea of the distribution of vouchers for Whitewater Canyon is given by the vouchers with coordinates, shown in the following map:

The Whitewater Canyon watershed is outline in white. See also a larger map.

Also in February 2010, Michael Charters kindly sent me his draft checklist of for the Whitewater Preserve Area of Whitewater Canyon, and gave permission to include it in the checklist presented below. Michael's list is invaluable in assessing the completeness of the voucher checklist.

The approximate area surveyed by Michael Charters over several days is shown on this map.

See also pictures from some of Michael's field trips from February 2009; April 2009 Part One; and April 2009 Part Two.

The final checklist contains 515 taxa. Of these, 104 taxa are vouchered from the Upper Canyon; 185 taxa are from Michael Charters' survey in the Middle Canyon; and 411 taxa are vouchered from the Lower Canyon.

Checklist for Whitewater River Canyon

The Checklist is sorted first by category - ferns, dicots, and monocots - and then by family and scientific name. The Family and Scientific Name are from the Jepson Manual. An asterisk before the Common Name indicates a non-native taxon.

The next three columns specify where in Whitewater Canyon each taxon was recorded. The first column, titled UC, gives the number of vouchers in the Upper Canyon, the part in San Bernardino County. The second column, titled MC, records whether Michael Charters has the taxon on his list. (MC) can also conveniently be interpreted as the Middle Canyon). The third column, titled LC, gives the number of vouchers in the Lower Canyon, the part in Riverside County.

Some of Michael Charters' taxa could not be fully identified during his survey; those are marked with a ~ or ? in that column.

The column SnBr indicates whether that taxon is in the SnBr Bootleg Flora from Krantz and Sanders, circa 2003. The column contains a code as follows:

CodeMeaning
1taxa in the SnBr flora with the same taxon name
2taxa that have had names converted to the Jepson Manual system
4taxa with SnBr or TR in the Jepson Manual geographic ranges
5taxa included in the SnBr flora from Munz or other non-Jepson Manual report
7taxa that have had subspecies assigned using the Jepson Manual geographic ranges
9taxa that are questionably present at SnBr

The final column, titled SoCal, indicates the number of lists for which each taxa is present in my database for southern California. This indicates how widespread each taxon is in southern California. Species with low numbers may be endemic to this area, or they may be misdetermined vouchers. Species with large numbers are either widespread and abundant in southern California, or they are abundant in some areas that are heavily over-represented in my database, such as the Santa Rosa Plateau, the San Jacinto Mountains, and the Borrego Desert.

Note also that, for species that have several subspecies, some floras and vouchers are determined only to species, and hence sometimes the abundance numbers are split between the species and subspecies. For example, Brickellia arguta is found in 7 lists in my database, its ssp. arguta is found in 14 lists, and its ssp. odontolepis is found in 6 lists. Thus the species, including all its subspecies, is found in a total of 27 lists, significantly more than the 7 that record just the species.

These last two columns help the user judge whether a vouchered taxon might have a questionable determination.

As noted above, vouchers of just the species were assigned to the appropriate subspecies whenever the subspecies was unambiguous. If it was ambiguous, vouchers of just the species name were retained along with any vouchers of subspecies that also existed. Hence this list sometimes contains vouchers of the species alongside vouchers of subspecies.

This is a working list, about which I make no guarantees at all. Use at your own risk!

A rough estimate of the minimum incompleteness of the voucher checklist can be made from Michael Charters' survey. Of Michael's 182 securely-identified taxa, 138 are present in the voucher checklists. This implies that the voucher checklist is 138 / 182 = 76% complete; i.e., the voucher checklist is missing 24% of the species. This is a minimum estimate of the incompleteness, since as can be seen from the distribution of vouchers, large areas of Whitewater Canyon have not been surveyed.

This implies that this checklist of 515 taxa is missing at least 162 taxa, and should contain at least 677 taxa.

That, of course, is one reason why a Bioblitz is going to be held here, to try to voucher some of those missing taxa.
