Flora of Round and Tamarack Valleys, San Jacinto Mountains For an introduction to this flora, see Flora of Tamarack, Round and Long Valleys.
See also Stream Bank Deposits in Round Valley Meadow.
For the subset of species in the flora given here that are found only in Round Valley, see Flora of Round Valley.
This flora has now been updated with the results of the 8/8/13 fieldwork, and has undergone a critical review of species on the list, both from old fieldwork and from vouchers, resulting in tossing some species. This flora gives abundances for species found in Round Valley Meadow, Round Valley as a whole, Tamarack Meadow and/or Tamarack Valley. The checklist also includes species observed in Long Valley. Species with no abundances given in any column were observed in Long Valley. For their abundances, see Flora of Long Valley.
Four species collected by Mary Spencer in 1923, that were said to be in Round Valley, were rejected as probably being on the west side of the mountain, at or near Little Round Valley: Calochortus invenustus, Dodecatheon redolens, Epilobium angustifolium ssp. circumvagum and Thalictrum fendleri, POM19844, POM19641, POM20023, and POM19795, respectively. D. redolens and E. angustifolium are not known from Round Valley, but do occur at or near Little Round Valley. In addition, the Thalictrum species in Round Valley Meadow is T. sparsiflorum, not T. fendleri.
Two vouchers determined as Poa secunda (UCR2712) and P. wheeleri (=P. nervosa; UCR2712) were rejected as being identical to the P. pratensis also vouchered from Round Valley Meadow. We have not specifically checked the determination of those plants, but they look just like the P. pratensis found ubiquitously at the higher elevations of San Jacinto. Whatever the actual determination, it is highly likely there is only one species, out of these three, actually present at Round Valley Meadow.
The last four columns give the number of plants, up to a maximum of 99, observed in Round Valley Meadow (column header RM); all of Round Valley, including Round Valley Meadow (RV); Tamarack Meadow (TM); and all of Tamarack Valley, including Tamarack Meadow (TV). If the species has been vouchered, but we have not seen it, the column contains V instead of a number.
The species found in each Meadow are those species growing in the Meadow itself, or in the area immediately adjacent to it, typically within something like several hundred feet. In the Round Valley Meadow Flora, we include the spring area just above it on its south, since the meadow plants extend continuously between that spring and the meadow.
Three species in the Round Valley Meadow flora were found only in that spring area, and not in the meadow proper: Carex heteroneura var. heteroneura, Osmorhiza chilensis and Platanthera leucostachys.
Some species have not had abundance estimates made for them yet, so their abundance is simply given as "1". Thus in the current version of this flora, species with an abundance estimate of "1" are ambiguous as to whether we observed just one species, or whether they just haven't had an abundance estimate made yet. In the vast majority of these cases, it is the latter, since it is very rare to find a single plant of a given species in a meadow.
Column header Full Name for Column RM Round Valley Meadow RV Round Valley, including Round Valley Meadow TM Tamarack Meadow, including the moist drainage immediately below the Meadow. TV Tamarack Valley, including Tamarack Meadow. Species with no entry in any of those columns were observed or vouchered elsewhere in Tamarack, Round and Long Valleys.
