Plant Voucher Checklist for Mission Creek Area, San Bernardino Mountains

Introduction
Procedure For Compiling The Checklist
Checklist

Introduction

This is not to be confused with a flora of this area!!! This is only a compilation of voucher names, found in an online search in January and February 2010 for vouchers. It may have some obviously-wrong names in it!!

Caveat emptor!

This checklist was compiled solely in preparation for the BioBlitz scheduled in Whitewater River Canyon on 12-13 April 2010. Such voucher lists are usually very incomplete.

Procedure For Compiling The Checklist

See Procedure For Compiling The Whitewater Canyon Checklist for the initial construction of the voucher list.

For the checklist below for the Mission Creek area east of Whitewater Canyon, I augmented these vouchers by a search for Riverside County vouchers with the words Mission Creek in the locality. That search yielded an additional 71 vouchers not found in the previous searches.

The locality field was reviewed for the additional vouchers. All were in the Mission Creek area considered here except for 28 vouchers from the Santa Ana Mountains that were removed.

The vouchers were compared to my southern California database, and all names were converted to the 1993 Jepson Manual versions as much as possible.

Vouchers of just the species were assigned to the appropriate subspecies whenever the subspecies was unambiguous. If it was ambiguous, vouchers of just the species name were retained along with any vouchers of subspecies that also existed.

This resulted in a total of 173 separate taxa given in the checklist below for the area east of Whitewater, from 387 vouchers that could be determined to species.

Checklist for Mission Creek Area

The Checklist is sorted first by category - ferns, dicots, and monocots - and then by family and scientific name. The Family and Scientific Name are from the Jepson Manual. An asterisk before the Common Name indicates a non-native taxon.

The next column, titled # V, gives the total number of vouchers found in the Mission Creek area.

The column SnBr indicates whether that taxon is in the SnBr Bootleg Flora from Krantz and Sanders, circa 2003. The column contains a code as follows:

CodeMeaning
1taxa in the SnBr flora with the same taxon name
2taxa that have had names converted to the Jepson Manual system
4taxa with SnBr or TR in the Jepson Manual geographic ranges
5taxa included in the SnBr flora from Munz or other non-Jepson Manual report
7taxa that have had subspecies assigned using the Jepson Manual geographic ranges
9taxa that are questionably present at SnBr

The final column, titled SoCal, indicates the number of lists for which each taxa is present in my database for southern California. This indicates how widespread each taxon is in southern California. Species with low numbers may be endemic to this area, or they may be misdetermined vouchers. Species with large numbers are either widespread and abundant in southern California, or they are abundant in some areas that are heavily over-represented in my database, such as the Santa Rosa Plateau, the San Jacinto Mountains, and the Borrego Desert.

Note also that, for species that have several subspecies, some floras and vouchers are determined only to species, and hence sometimes the abundance numbers are split between the species and subspecies. For example, Brickellia arguta is found in 8 lists in my database, its ssp. arguta is found in 14 lists, and its ssp. odontolepis is found in 6 lists. Thus the species, including all its subspecies, is found in a total of 27 lists, significantly more than the 8 that record just the species.

These last two columns help the user judge whether a vouchered taxon might have a questionable determination.

This is a working list, about which I make no guarantees at all. Use at your own risk!
