Flora of San Sebastian Marsh, Imperial County

Introduction
Checklist

Introduction

This checklist is a start at a true flora of the San Sebastian Marsh Area. It consists of the species found in a single survey on 31 January 2011 and vouchers of the area.

The survey on 31 January 2011 was done by the authors, and found 47 taxa. The survey was of a 6 mile loop of the eastern portion of the Marsh area, from the longitude of Harper's Well on the west to the longitude of the junction of the two branches of the Old Kane Spring Road on the east.

The vouchered species on this checklist come from a search on 1 February 2011 of the Consortium of California Herbaria.

The Consortium records were searched for vouchers with coordinates between 33.04 and 33.13° N. Latitude, and -116.00 and -115.83 E. Longitude. Additional searches were made for vouchers from Imperial County from Charles Convis, and with the term Sebastian in their locality field.

Localities of those vouchers were examined and two not definitely in the target area were eliminated.

Two vouchered species are significantly out of range, and may not be correctly determined: Tiquilia nuttallii and Lepidium nitidum var. howellii.

The voucher determination of Eriogonum inflatum was changed to E. trichopes, since the voucher description said the plants were annual, and we observed E. trichopes here, not E. inflatum. It is a common mistake, which we made ourselves the first time we saw this species, to mistake E. trichopes as being young plants of E. inflatum.

The final voucher list contained 158 vouchers of 88 taxa. Adding together all the vouchers associated with a given collector name produces the following list of top individual collectors, which includes all people who have collected more than three vouchers:

# Vouchers% VouchersCollector

85%Steven R. Hill, K. Kramer
53%T. L. Secrest

Charles Convis was the top collector by far, as part of his U.C. Santa Cruz San Sebastian Marsh Project, Plants of San Sebastian Marsh Area.

Leslie Sokolow, responding to our request previously made on this webpage for a copy of the botanical report from Convis for the Marsh, kindly sent us a copy on 20 December 2011. In the next major update of this page, we'll include any additional species in the list by Convis, as well as any additional botanical tidbits from that report.

The total checklist contains 96 taxa.

Checklist for San Sebastian Marsh

The Checklist is sorted first by category - dicots, monocots, and ferns - and then by family and scientific name. The Family and Scientific Name are from the Jepson Manual 1996 First Edition, with the Family name being abbreviated to eight characters.

The column titled #Pl gives the number of plants found in our single survey, with a maximum of 99 plants.

The column titled #V gives the number of vouchers found for this area.

The column titled #BD gives the number of survey areas and floras in the Borrego Desert to the northwest in which each taxon was found.

Voucher locations for any taxon can be obtained by searching the Consortium of California Herbaria for the taxon name.
