Checklist

Introduction

I compiled this list from vouchers prior to a trip to search for Chaenactis carphoclinia var. peirsonii on 28 February 2010.

See also Flora of Palm Wash Area in both San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Location

Voucher locations are plotted in the following map:

A very small portion of the Salton Sea is seen at upper right. The mountains in the upper left are the southwest tip of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The San Diego / Imperial County line is marked by the north-side boundary between different shades of green immediately west of the vouchers. County Road S22 from Borrego Springs to SR86 is shown going mostly east-west along the lower part of the map.

Procedure For Compiling The Checklist

On 28 February 2010, I did a geographic search of the Consortium of California Herbaria for vouchers with coordinates in the box defined by latitude 33.273 to 33.339° and longitude -116.083 to -115.979°. A total of 644 vouchers were found, of 121 taxa. Most taxa are fully resolved to their lowest level, but a few are given only to the species level. If it was unambiguous which subspecies is present here, I assigned those vouchers to that subspecies. Some species with two subspecies, such as Chaenactis carphoclinia, could not be so assigned, and hence the following list gives both the species and the two subspecies, with the number of vouchers given for each one.

The dominant collectors by far are Jon Rebman and Larry Hendrickson, with various permutations of co-collectors:

Important Caveats

Please note the following important caveats about this preliminary Checklist:

Checklist for Palm Wash Area

The Checklist is sorted first by category - ferns, dicots, and monocots - and then by family and scientific name. The JM Family and Scientific Name are from the Jepson Manual. An asterisk before the Common Name indicates a non-native taxon.

The column labeled V gives the total number of vouchers found in the area.

The column labeled BD gives the total number of areas in the Borrego Desert to the west in which each taxon has been observed by me. I placed this column here primarily for my use, to see which taxa I should especially look for. (Note that a zero in this field might just mean that it is a voucher species not fully determined to subspecies level.)

This is a working list, about which we make no guarantees at all. Use at your own risk!
