Introduction

This page is just a quickie page to compare pix of vegetative buds from P. ponderosa from Palomar Mountain and P. jeffreyi from the Laguna / Cuyamaca Mountains of San Diego County, as well as cone buds.

Photographs of Vegetative Buds

The following pix are of vegetative buds that have not yet begun to open. The Ponderosa buds all show a resinous coating; the Jeffrey buds do not. Click on the pictures for larger versions.

Photographs of Opening Vegetative Buds

The following pix are of vegetative buds that have begun opening. Ponderosa buds lose the resin coating as they open, but often you can still see remnants of the resin for a while. In the single picture shown here, there are only small traces of the original resinous coating on the bracts that have not yet begun to open. Click on the pictures for larger versions.

Photographs of Non-Vegetative Buds

These photographs are probably of cone buds, which are not used to distinguish the species. Click on the pictures for larger versions.
