Plant Species of the Bright Angel Trail:
Trumpet Gooseberry, Ribes leptanthum

See Plant Guide to Bright Angel Trail for an introduction to this page, especially the Introduction To These Species Pages.

Characteristics

Identification status: 100%. See Ribes velutinum for how to separate this gooseberry from R. velutinum.

From a SEINet search on 11 May 2008, there are seven vouchers of this species from the South Rim Coconino County portion of the Grand Canyon, including two from this trail. The ones from this trail are at: above second tunnel, elevation 5900 feet; and 5700 feet elevation. Note that there may be additional vouchers at other herbaria not available through SEINet.

First occurrence on Bright Angel Trail: mile 1.12, elevation 6040 feet (1841 m).

Number of plants along Trail: at least 50 plants were found in at least different 9 locations in May 2008.

The plants extend significantly lower than the 5700 feet minimum elevation reported in the floras, but I haven't yet noted the location of the lowest ones.
