Plant Species of the Bright Angel Trail: *common mallow, Malva neglecta

See Plant Guide to Bright Angel Trail for an introduction to this page.

This is a non-native species.

Characteristics

Identification status: high confidence. Although there were no flowers on the plants in 2007, I observed typical Malva neglecta flowers on plants in 2006 at the same location. There are only two Malva species in the Grand Canyon flora, both non-natives, which can only be distinguished by their flowers. The easiest distinction is the size of the petals. M. parviflora has small almost-unnoticeable flowers (petals less than 1/4 inch long according to McDougall), and M. neglecta has larger, more noticeable petals 1/4 to 1/2 inch long.

From a SEINet search, there are 4 vouchers of this species from the Coconino County portion of the Grand Canyon. The nearest are at: Buggeln Tank Area (near Grandview); and Desert View on East Rim Drive. There are no online vouchers of M. parviflora from the Grand Canyon. The 1987 Grand Canyon flora reports M. parviflora only from Havasu Canyon. Note that there may be additional vouchers at other herbaria not available through SEINet.

First occurrence on Bright Angel Trail: mile 0.00, elevation 6845 feet (2086 m).

Number of plants along Trail: 10 plants were found in 2 different locations in September 2007, only at the trailhead and near mile 0.06. More plants might be found in a wetter year.
