Plant Species of the Bright Angel Trail:
California brickellbush, Brickellia californica

See Plant Guide to Bright Angel Trail for an introduction to this page, especially the Introduction To These Species Pages.

This page is just a shell to hold my photographs and reference information for now, so that readers can see the photographs and this taxon. The identification status, voucher info, and discussion of the species will be added in the future.

Identification status: .

From a SEINet search on 29 September 2007, there are vouchers of this species from the Coconino County portion of the Grand Canyon. The nearest are at: ; and . Note that there may be additional vouchers at other herbaria not available through SEINet.

First occurrence on Bright Angel Trail: mile 0.04, elevation 6824 feet (2080 m).

Number of plants along Trail: The trail is lined with this species in many spots; it is one of the most common species on this trail. At least 99 plants were found in at least 9 different locations in September 2007.

From 14 September 2006, mile 0.04:

I came across a single plant at mile 1.14, that I initially thought was different from B. californica. However, once I finished taking pictures, I realized that it was indeed B. californica.

At home, I again thought it might be different, since the buds seemed to be single. But when I couldn't find any other species that fit these plants, I again concluded it was B. californica.

With so many specimens of B. californica on this trail, it might not be surprising to find one that looked a little different from the others.

I later accidentally found a photograph of B. californica at SEINet which appeared very similar in having one node with just one or two buds visible at first before producing its usual cluster of flowers.

Here are the pictures of the plant at mile 1.14 from 5 September 2007:
