On 2/6/99, the FHS academic decathlon team beat out 43 other schools to win the Super-Quiz portion of the 16th annual countywide decathlon. La Jolla High won the overall decathlon.
In both 1998 and 1999, it was a struggle to fund teachers to manage the team, since the district no longer paid teachers to coach the team. As a result, the Fallbrook team in both years only began studying for the competition 11 weeks after the competition began.
In 1997, the FUHS academic decathlon team was chosen to represent the entire state of California in the national competition held 21-23 June, 1997, in Orlando, Florida.
Most states have state academic competitions which choose their representatives, but California picks theirs from written applications consisting of team profiles, their list of accomplishments, and letters of recommendaiton. The evaluation process is evidently pretty good, since the 1993 California team, Torrey Pines High School, won the national competition.

Potter's academic decathlon team recaptured the first-place standing it held 2 years ago in the 1997 competition against Hidden Valley, Grant, Del Dios, San Marcos and Rincon Middle Schools. Potter has taken first or second place in each of Paula Mackey's 10 years as coach.
The success is all the more remarkable because other schools devote more time and money to their teams. Each of the 5 teams Potter competed against listed a separate coach for each of the 5 categories in the competition: science, English, math, history and current events. Mackey is the coach for all 5 categories at Potter! Further, Potter only practiced as a team for about a month, less than the other schools reported.
