Combined, the top six search engines cover about 42% of the web.

To get the size of the web, the researcher's procedure searched systematically through 2,500 random Web servers, calculated the average number of pages on each server and extrapolated to the 2.8 million servers on the web. They then used 1,050 search queries to estimate the coverage of the search engines.
