Observed Bloom Period for Calochortus

Detailed Past Records of Bloom Times

I kept detailed records for the year 2001 for the entire Santa Rosa Plateau, and for the years 2002 and 2003 (through 6/8/03) just for the Vernal Pool Trail. The following table gives the start and end of blooming, as well as the start and end of peak bloom. Peak Bloom is defined as when the maximum number of flowers were open in a given year. The beginning and end times below are when 1% of the maximum number of flowers were open, or 1 flower was open, whichever is less. Typically, the very first flower and the very last flower appear only a week before or after the 1% dates.

All full bloom dates are from observations, thus it is possible that the peak bloom began a few days earlier and ended a few days later than the dates reported below. The dates for 1% bloom are sometimes interpolated.

C. albus, fairy lantern, white globe lily

Estimate from memory, not data recorded at the time: at peak bloom in a normal year on the Vernal Pool Trail, there are about 20-30 flowers open; "1%" of that number was declared to be 1 flower open. There were no blooms in the severe drought year of 2002.

C. splendens, splendid Mariposa lily

Estimate from memory, not data recorded at the time: at peak bloom in a normal year on the Vernal Pool Trail, there are 100-200 flowers open; ~1% of that number is 1-2 flower open. In the severe drought year of 2002, peak bloom was something like 10-20 flowers.

C. weedii var. weedii, yellow Mariposa lily, Weed's Mariposa lily

Estimate from memory, not data recorded at the time: at peak bloom in a normal year on the Vernal Pool Trail, there are 10-20 flowers open; "1%" of that number was arbitrarily set at 1 flower open. In the severe drought year of 2002, peak bloom was something like 10-20 flowers. Observations stopped before the bloom in 2003, so no data are reported for that year.
