Survey Date10 May 2012

122 species observed.

Surveyed 5/10 2012, which in most years would be prime time. This year it was dry, however, which was odd since the previous section was not.

This section begins near the headwaters of Arrastre Creek, which it follows for a ways. The trail then ascends the western ridge which becomes most of this section. The trail also passes through an old burn area in which the Pinyon Pines have yet to regenerate. Pinyon pines apparently have to come in from surrounding areas, and the timescale for recovery is something like 400 years.

This is also the first encounter with Joshua trees. The xeric nature of plants found here on this eastern end of the mountains illustrates the decrease in precipitation that occurs west to east in the San Bernardino mountains.
