Plants of Southern California: Plant Families With the Most Entries in Our Master List

Just for fun, this is a list of the families with the most entries in our master list. This is highly correlated with the number of species and/or taxa present in southern California for each family, but is not identical to it.

In particular, the numbers below are NOT the number of species or even taxa within each family! This is just a count of the number of database entries for each family in our master list of southern California species. Species with subspecies also have an entry for the species in the master list, and the master list often contains varieties and subspecies that are no longer accepted in the Jepson Manual, as well as hybrids and about 200 entries identified only to the genus. The master list also includes some taxa that actually do not exist in southern California, either due to misdetermined vouchers or the use of an older or misapplied name to that voucher.

There are 168 families in the list below. Just nine families contain over half of all the entries in our master list.
